Teach your first class
Applying to teach with Lingoda is straightforward. You start by submitting an online application, including personal details, teaching certifications, and your professional experience. If your application meets their criteria, you’ll be invited to a 30-minute online interview that includes a short teaching demonstration. This session helps Lingoda evaluate your teaching style, familiarity with the material, and ability to engage students.
Successful candidates go through onboarding, which includes a brief training to familiarize them with Lingoda’s platform and tools.
Lingoda claims that this can all happen in one week.
How Lingoda Works
Lingoda’s classes are conducted via Zoom, a reliable platform that integrates seamlessly with their lesson plans and teaching materials. Tutors lead either one-on-one or small group sessions, typically focusing on practical language skills used in real-world scenarios.
Lesson plans are provided for every class, so tutors don’t need to create their own materials. This setup allows instructors to concentrate on guiding conversations, encouraging participation, and providing feedback.
Group classes are kept small, usually with around three students, to foster an interactive and personalized learning environment. Tutors are encouraged to maximize student talk time and maintain a professional, distraction-free setting during sessions.
Lingoda’s Schedule
Lingoda stands out for its scheduling flexibility. There are no minimum teaching hour requirements, allowing tutors to decide how much they work. Tutors can choose sessions that align with their availability and areas of expertise. Lingoda allows teachers to book both long-term (months in advance) and short-term (hours in advance).
Lingoda compensates tutors for last-minute student cancellations, paying 50% of the session fee if the cancellation occurs within 48 hours. Tutors, in turn, are expected to provide at least 48 hours’ notice if they need to cancel a class to avoid penalties.
Lingoda Student Type
Students on the Lingoda platform are adults.
Lingoda Teacher Salary
Between $8 USD and $13 USD per hour
Lingoda pays between $8 and $13 per hour, depending on the tutor’s qualifications, experience, and the language taught. While this rate may not be as competitive as other platforms, the convenience of pre-prepared materials and the flexibility in scheduling make it appealing for those looking for supplemental income.
Payments are processed monthly, and tutors work as independent contractors, which means handling taxes and other legal requirements is the tutor's responsibility.
Our Lingoda Review
Benefits of Teaching with Lingoda
Diverse, Adult Student Base
Tutors interact with students from all over the world, primarily adults, which adds variety to lessons and offers opportunities to learn about different cultures.
Pre-Designed Materials
Lesson plans and materials are provided, saving tutors the time and effort of creating their own.
Flexible Scheduling
Lingoda’s system allows tutors to set their availability and work as much or as little as they like.
Technical Support
The platform offers a reliable teaching environment via Zoom and provides resources and support to address technical issues.
Challenges of Teaching with Lingoda
Student Consistency
Tutors are unlikely to teach the same students regularly, which can make it harder to build rapport and track progress.
Pay Rates
Lingoda’s hourly rates may not meet the expectations of tutors with advanced qualifications or extensive experience.
Freelance Model
As independent contractors, tutors don’t receive benefits like health insurance or paid leave, and they’re responsible for managing their own taxes.
Final Thoughts
Lingoda offers an accessible teaching opportunity for experienced tutors who value flexibility and enjoy working with adult learners from diverse backgrounds. The provided lesson materials and user-friendly platform make it a practical choice for those seeking a structured, low-preparation teaching role.
However, the lower pay rates and freelance employment model may not suit everyone. For tutors prioritizing flexibility and minimal prep time over higher earnings, Lingoda remains a solid option.
