With the world slowly getting used to “the new normal”, it is making more and more sense to have the ability to work from home. Many well-paying companies where you can teach English require you to have a degree. The reality, though, is that not everyone who wants to teach English online has a degree. This could be for any number of reasons, but the fact remains that not having a degree shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your passion (if teaching online is your passion).

Thankfully, more and more companies are letting people teach English online without a degree, so you can let out a sigh of relief. We’re here to help you on the road to teaching English online, so grab a snack and get ready to read about companies that let you do just that.

As you may have noticed, this website gives you information on schools that require and don’t require a degree. It is always nice to have the option but do bear in mind that schools that allow you to teach English online without a degree will not always pay as much as those that require you to have a degree.

At the end of the day, though, you will get paid, and if you excel at your teaching, you will get better and better paying jobs. The sky is literally the limit when it comes to teaching English online. Not to be overlooked is the fact that if you eventually branch off on your own, you will be able to set your own rates and won’t be tied down because of not having a degree. That sounds like a win to me.

Here are some great online schools that allow you to teach English without a degree:

Preply

Good, old Preply is back here on the list. At Preply, you can set your own hours and rates. It is important to note that Preply takes 100% of your earnings for each of your first lessons with first-time students and 33% thereafter. The average rate is between $15 and $20 USD. Click here for more information and to apply.

Cambly

If you Google companies where you can teach online without a degree, Cambly is sure to be featured in the top 10. Like Preply, you set your own schedule at Cambly. It is flexible and you can work “on the go”. There are some great benefits for working on this platform that include earning $10.20 an hour, getting paid weekly, and using your mobile phone or tablet to teach. How cool is that? Talk about convenient.  Find out more here

Verbling

This is yet another marketplace for freelance online English teachers. As is par for the course, you get to set your own rates, with the added benefits of choosing your own schedule, getting to meet new people from around the world and teaching anytime. Methods of payment include PayPal and Payoneer. Make sure to read up on the website and reviews to see what you can do to improve your ratings and to find the best times to teach so you can maximise your skills.  Feel free to apply here

Skyeng

This is a relatively unknown online school (or at least I didn’t know anything about it until I dug into the interwebs). They cater to the Eastern European market and claim to be the best one in that region. Sounds like it would be nice to be part of a company that is planning on achieving that title, wouldn’t you say? Their pay rate for non-native English speakers is $5 for 50 minutes. The rate is $10-12 for native speakers. They pay via PayPal every two weeks. Their lessons are one-on-one and they use their own virtual classroom to conduct lessons.  You can learn more about them here

Tutlo

This is another new online school that hires you even if you don’t have a degree. This Polish-based company has pay rates from $5-$11 an hour. You need to have at least six months of teaching experience as well as a TEFL certificate. You can teach 20-, 40- or 60-minute lessons. I like this kind of flexibility in class length.  It serves both students and teachers who prefer different types of lessons. Also, it helps you improve your lesson planning because you will become better at knowing  what should be covered, especially in a 20-minute lesson.  Apply to this platform by completing this form here.

iTalki

This school has two types of teachers: those with degrees and those without. This, of course, means that pay differs, but it allows you to teach if you don’t have a degree, so that’s a plus. Their website has a lot of details about what you can expect before and after you apply so be sure to read up on it if you decide to go through the process. They give you guidelines as to what they require from you. You need to have an intro video, be a native speaker and have references. Pay starts from $8-$12 and can increase once you’ve gotten enough good reviews. You can check it out here.

PalFish

We have a whole page dedicated to this company on our blog so be sure to check it out for a more detailed overview of this school. They have a few different programs that teachers can be a part of, but their Free Talk program doesn’t require you to have a teaching certificate or a degree. You can teach from your phone or tablet. It’s a great gig for some extra income. Check out this page for all the details on applying.

Opportunities for everyone

While most of the online English teaching world wants to hire teachers with degrees, it doesn’t mean there aren’t positions out there for those who don’t have one.

Comment below if you have any personal experience with these schools so teachers can hear from you before deciding to apply. Also, if there are any schools we’ve missed, please feel free to share them in the comments!
